Giuseppe (1923-2010) e Giovanna Panza di Biumo sono stati collezionisti appassionati e instancabili che nel corso di oltre cinquant'anni hanno creato una raccolta di arte contemporanea straordinaria, con opere di Rothko, Kline, Tàpies, Lichtenstein, Oldenburg, Rosenquist, Andre, Serra, Nauman, Kosuth, LeWitt, Weiner, fino alle sperimentazioni che negli anni ottanta e novanta alcuni artisti compiono sulle vibrazioni luminose del colore sulla potenzialità espressiva delle forme vitali. È tuttavia la visione sottesa alla collezione a essere eccezionale: un'innata e audace capacità di riconoscere in ogni opera il radicale, peculiare contenuto di verità, in netto anticipo sui tempi della critica e del mercato dell'arte. Il volume è il frutto di una lunga conversazione con Philippe Ungar tra il 2007 e il 2009. In questo dialogo, colto ed emozionante, la necessità interiore di scoprire e acquistare opere si declina come avventura intellettuale, percorso spirituale, ma anche come creazione di un lessico famigliare fondato sulla tenace ricerca della bellezza attraverso l'arte. I capolavori della collezione sono esposti nei più prestigiosi musei (dal Guggenheim di New York al MOCA di Los Angeles), costituendone in molti casi il nucleo originario, oltre che nella storica Villa Panza di Varese oggi patrimonio del FAI.
